What is addiction?
Addiction is a condition in which an individual experiences an overwhelming compulsion to use substances or engage in problematic behaviours despite harmful consequences.
Whether it's alcohol, drugs, prescription medications, gambling, or compulsive sexual behaviours, addiction strains relationships, work, physical health, and self-worth. The cycle can feel impossible to break alone, but understanding that addiction is treatable and recovery is possible is the first step toward reclaiming your life.
Symptoms of addiction
- Using substances or engaging in behaviours more frequently or in larger quantities than intended
- Repeated unsuccessful attempts to cut back or stop, despite genuinely wanting to
- Experiencing intense cravings or urges that feel impossible to resist
- Continuing despite serious consequences, relationship problems, job loss, financial difficulties, or health issues
- Needing more of the substance or behaviour to achieve the same effect (tolerance)
- Experiencing withdrawal symptoms like physical discomfort, anxiety, or irritability when trying to stop
- Using in secret, lying about the extent of use, or hiding evidence from loved ones
Not sure if it's drug dependence?
A short, confidential self-assessment can help you decide whether it’s time to talk to someone.
Causes of addiction
- Genetics and biology: Family history of addiction and brain chemistry differences can increase vulnerability to developing substance use disorders.
- Mental health conditions: Depression, anxiety, trauma, or ADHD can drive people to use substances or behaviours as a way to cope with emotional pain.
- Environmental factors: Early exposure, peer pressure, stress, trauma, or lack of healthy coping mechanisms can trigger addictive patterns.
- Substance effects: Some substances chemically alter the brain's reward system, creating physical dependence and powerful cravings.
- Developmental timing: Substance use during adolescence or young adulthood, when the brain is still developing, increases addiction risk.
Why is treatment important?
Untreated addiction can lead to:
- Severe physical health problems including organ damage, overdose, infectious diseases, or life-threatening medical conditions
- Complete breakdown of relationships, loss of family trust, divorce, or permanent estrangement from loved ones
- Job loss, financial ruin, legal consequences, homelessness, or involvement in dangerous situations
- Worsening mental health including severe depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, or co-occurring psychiatric disorders
- Premature death from overdose, accidents, health complications, or suicide
