What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar Disorder is a mental health condition marked by extreme shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels. These shifts range from intense highs (mania or hypomania) to deep lows (depression), often disrupting daily life, relationships, and work. It's not just mood swings everyone experiences—bipolar disorder doesn't discriminate and can affect anyone at any stage of life. The emotional rollercoaster can feel unpredictable and overwhelming, making it hard to maintain stability. Many people live with undiagnosed bipolar for years, mistaking episodes for personality traits or stress. Recognising the pattern early is the first step toward managing it effectively.

Symptoms of bipolar disorder

  • Periods of unusually high energy, feeling “on top of the world,” or needing very little sleep
  • Impulsive decisions like overspending, risky behaviour, or starting multiple projects you can't finish
  • Deep lows where getting out of bed, eating, or showing up to work feels impossible
  • Racing thoughts, talking fast, or feeling like your mind won't slow down
  • Intense irritability or anger that seems out of proportion to the situation
  • Loss of interest in things you once enjoyed, combined with hopelessness or worthlessness
  • Drastic changes in energy—going from extremely productive to completely shut down
  • Difficulty maintaining relationships due to unpredictable mood changes or emotional intensity

Causes of bipolar disorder

  • Genetics: Bipolar disorder often runs in families, with a strong hereditary link
  • Brain structure and chemistry: Imbalances in neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin affect mood regulation
  • Hormonal changes: Pregnancy, thyroid issues, or other hormonal shifts can trigger or worsen episodes
  • Stressful life events: Trauma, loss, major transitions, or chronic stress can act as catalysts for mood episodes
  • Substance use: Alcohol or drug use can mimic, trigger, or intensify bipolar symptoms

Why is treatment important?

Untreated Bipolar Disorder can lead to:

  • Severe depressive episodes that increase the risk of self-harm or suicidal thoughts
  • Damaged relationships, job loss, or financial instability due to impulsive or erratic behaviour
  • Co-occurring conditions like anxiety, substance abuse, or eating disorders
  • Physical health problems including heart disease, diabetes, and chronic sleep disturbances
  • Complete loss of functioning, hospitalisation, or dangerous situations during manic episodes

Our approach at Samarpan

We follow a personalised, evidence-based approach that addresses both the emotional and medical aspects of bipolar disorder.

Step 1

Personalised Assessments

We conduct thorough evaluations to identify the type of bipolar disorder, track mood patterns, and understand how episodes affect your life. This helps us design a treatment plan that's specific to you.

Step 2

Evidence-Based Therapies

We use therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT), and Family-Focused Therapy to help you recognise triggers, regulate emotions, and build stable routines.

Step 3

Trauma-Informed Psychological Care

We understand that bipolar disorder often co-exists with past trauma or other mental health challenges. Our approach is compassionate, non-judgmental, and treats you as a whole person, not just a diagnosis.

Step 4

Medical and Long-Term Support

Medication is often essential in managing bipolar disorder. We work closely with psychiatrists to find the right combination of mood stabilisers or other medications. We also provide relapse prevention, lifestyle coaching, and ongoing support.
