What is health anxiety?

Health anxiety is a mental health condition where a person experiences ongoing and excessive fear of having or developing a serious illness, even when medical tests show no cause for concern. Normal body sensations like headaches, tiredness, or muscle pain are often mistaken for signs of severe disease, leading to constant worry that affects daily life, work, relationships, and emotional well-being. With proper therapeutic support, health anxiety is highly treatable and manageable.

Symptoms of health anxiety

  • Persistent worry about health despite medical reassurance
  • Obsessive checking of the body for signs of illness (lumps, pain, pulse, breathing)
  • Frequent internet searches related to symptoms or diseases
  • Heightened awareness of bodily sensations
  • Avoidance of hospitals, doctors, or medical information or compulsive doctor visits and tests
  • Difficulty concentrating, restlessness, irritability, and sleep disturbances
  • Fear of death, serious illness, or medical emergencies

Causes of health anxiety

  • Previous serious illness or medical trauma
  • Illness or death of a loved one
  • Chronic stress or anxiety disorders
  • A tendency toward catastrophic thinking
  • Excessive exposure to health-related information or misinformation
  • Childhood experiences involving illness or overprotection.

Why is treatment important?

Without treatment, health anxiety can lead to:

  • Chronic stress and emotional exhaustion
  • Panic attacks or generalized anxiety disorder
  • Depression and social withdrawal
  • Avoidance of everyday activities
  • Overuse of medical services and repeated tests

Effective treatment, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), can help individuals challenge fearful thoughts, reduce compulsive reassurance-seeking, and regain control over their lives.
