What is a sleep disorder?
Sleep disorders are conditions that disrupt your ability to get enough high-quality sleep. While you are sleeping your brain and body functions are still active. Sleep is a natural process that helps your body restore energy, supports learning and memory, and keeps you healthy.
It's not just the number of hours of sleep you get that matters. The quality of your sleep is also important. During the night, your brain cycles through different stages of non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.
Symptoms of sleep disorders
- Difficulty falling asleep or it takes more than 30 minutes to fall asleep regularly.
- Trouble staying asleep through the night or you wake up often in the middle of the night and can't fall back asleep.
- Snoring, gasping or choking happens during sleep.
- Feeling like you need to move when you relax. Movement relieves this feeling.
- Feeling like you can't move when you wake up.
Not sure if it's sleep disorders?
A short, confidential self-assessment can help you decide whether it’s time to talk to someone.
Causes of sleep disorders
- Health conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, nerve disorders, or pain
- Mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety
- Medicines
- Genetics
Why is treatment important?
Untreated Sleeping Disorder Treatment can lead to:
- Severe health risks or refeeding syndrome.
- Long-term psychological distress like anxiety or depression
- Difficulty learning, remembering or making decisions
- Personality changes like irritability
- Lower reaction times (making accidents more likely to happen)
Our approach at Samarpan
We follow a personalized, evidence-based approach for effective sleeping disorder treatment to help manage and overcome it:
Personalised Approach
Changing your sleeping routine to promote a regular sleep schedule and proper sleep hygiene and using a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine or having a neurostimulator implanted to control sleep apnea.
Evidence-Based Therapies
Our therapists use proven, science-backed methods for improving the quality of sleep cycle such as light therapy and bring lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercises.
Sleep Hygiene
Sleep hygiene refers to daily habits and environmental factors that support good sleep. This includes maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, reducing caffeine intake, limiting screen use before bed, and creating a calm, dark sleeping environment. While these practices are helpful, they usually work best when combined with structured interventions like CBT-I rather than as a standalone solution.
Medication
Medications can provide short-term relief for insomnia, especially during acute stress or severe sleep disruption. Options like Melatonin help regulate the sleep-wake cycle, while sedative-hypnotics such as Zolpidem or Eszopiclone promote sleep onset. However, they are generally recommended for limited use due to potential side effects, tolerance, and dependence.
