Substance Use
When something you relied on starts controlling you.

What is addiction?
Addiction is a condition where someone experiences an overwhelming compulsion to use substances. It also includes engaging in certain behaviours, despite real and harmful consequences. Whether it's alcohol, drugs, prescription medication, gambling, or compulsive sexual behaviour, addiction strains relationships, work, physical health, and self-worth along with having harmful consequences. The cycle can feel impossible to break alone; however, understanding that addiction is treatable and that recovery is possible is the first step toward reclaiming your life.
Symptoms of addiction
- Using substances or engaging in behaviours in larger quantities or more frequently than intended.
- Repeated unsuccessful attempts to cut back or stop, despite genuinely wanting to.
- Experiencing intense cravings or urges that feel impossible to resist.
- Continuing despite serious consequences leading to relationship problems, job loss, financial difficulties, or health issues.
- Needing more of the substance or behaviour to achieve the same effect.
- Experiencing withdrawal symptoms like physical discomfort, anxiety, or irritability when trying to stop.
- Using in secret, lying about the extent of use, or hiding evidence from loved ones.

Causes
Substance effects occur when some substances chemically alter the brain's reward system, creating physical dependence and powerful cravings. Genetics and biology, a family history of addiction and differences in brain chemistry can increase vulnerability to developing a substance use disorder. Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, trauma, or ADHD can drive people to use substances or behaviours as a way to cope with emotional pain. Environmental factors, early exposure, peer pressure, stress, trauma, or a lack of healthy coping mechanisms can trigger addictive patterns. Finally, substance use during adolescence or young adulthood increases the risk of addiction because the brain is still developing.
Why treatment matters?
Untreated addiction can lead to severe physical health problems, including organ damage, overdose, infectious diseases, or life-threatening medical conditions. Psychologically, there can be serious breakdown of relationships, loss of family trust, divorce, permanent estrangement from loved ones, job loss, financial ruin, legal consequences, homelessness, or involvement in dangerous situations. These cause worsening mental health, including severe depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, or co-occurring psychiatric disorders. In the most serious cases, premature death from overdose, accidents, health complications, or suicide are consequences.
Note: If you or someone you love is having thoughts of suicide or is at risk of overdose right now, please contact iCall at 9152987821, Monday to Saturday, 8am to 10pm, or go to your nearest emergency room.
Our approach at Samarpan
We follow a personalised and evidence-based approach that addresses not just the addiction but the underlying pain and trauma that fuels it.
Personalised Assessments
We conduct thorough evaluations to understand your unique situation, substance use patterns, co-occurring mental health conditions, and treatment needs. This helps us create a plan that is tailored specifically to you.
Evidence-Based Therapies
We use proven approaches, including Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), along with relapse prevention strategies. Our approach is not 12-step based. We focus on clinical and evidence-based interventions tailored to your individual needs.
Trauma-Informed Psychological Care
Addiction is rarely just about the substance or behaviour itself. It's usually connected to unresolved pain, trauma, or emotional wounds underneath it. Our compassionate and non-judgemental approach addresses these root causes while building resilience, self-worth, and healthier coping strategies through individual and group therapy.
Comprehensive Medical and Holistic Support
If required, we provide medically supervised medication-assisted withdrawal. Our treatment also integrates psychiatric care for co-occurring conditions with complementary therapies including yoga, meditation, art therapy, fitness training, and nutritional counselling to provide support for the individual.
