What is dementia?
In simple terms, dementia is a condition that affects memory, thinking, and everyday functioning over time. It's not just about “getting older” or occasional forgetfulness—this doesn't discriminate and can affect people in different ways and at different stages.
You may notice changes in memory, decision-making, communication, or behaviour. These changes can gradually interfere with daily activities like managing finances, remembering conversations, or staying organised. It can also affect emotions, leading to confusion, frustration, or withdrawal. Understanding these signs early can help you or your loved one get the right support and care.
Symptoms of dementia
- Forgetting recent conversations or important dates frequently
- Repeating the same questions or stories without realising
- Difficulty finding the right words during conversations
- Getting confused about time, places, or familiar routes
- Struggling with routine tasks like managing bills or cooking
- Changes in mood, such as irritability, anxiety, or withdrawal
- Misplacing things and being unable to retrace steps
- Reduced judgment or difficulty making everyday decisions
Not sure if it's dementia?
A short, confidential self-assessment can help you decide whether it’s time to talk to someone.
Causes of dementia
- Biological factors: Changes in brain structure and function over time
- Genetic factors: Family history may increase the risk in some cases
- Medical conditions: Conditions like stroke, diabetes, or neurological disorders
- Lifestyle factors: Poor diet, lack of activity, or unmanaged health issues
- Environmental factors: Limited mental stimulation or social isolation
Why is treatment important?
Untreated dementia can lead to:
- Progressive memory loss and confusion
- Difficulty performing daily activities independently
- Increased emotional distress, anxiety, or agitation
- Higher risk of accidents or safety concerns
- Greater strain on caregivers and family relationships
