What is postpartum depression?

In simple terms, postpartum depression is a type of emotional struggle that some women experience after childbirth. It goes beyond the “baby blues” and can feel more intense, longer-lasting, and harder to manage. It's not just about feeling sad—this doesn't discriminate and can affect any new mother, regardless of background or support.

It can impact how you feel about yourself, your baby, and your daily life. Simple tasks may feel overwhelming, and you may feel disconnected or exhausted most of the time. Recognising these changes early can help you get the support you need and start feeling like yourself again.

Symptoms of postpartum depression

  • Feeling persistently low, tearful, or emotionally numb
  • Struggling to feel connected to your baby or yourself
  • Constant guilt, self-doubt, or feeling like you're not doing enough
  • Extreme tiredness that doesn't improve with rest
  • Losing interest in things you usually enjoy
  • Feeling overwhelmed by small tasks or daily routines
  • Trouble sleeping, even when the baby is asleep
  • Withdrawing from family, friends, or support systems

Causes of postpartum depression

  • Biological factors: Hormonal changes after childbirth can affect mood regulation
  • Psychological patterns: Self-doubt, pressure to be a “perfect” parent
  • Life experiences: Previous mental health concerns or difficult pregnancies
  • Environmental pressure: Lack of support, relationship stress, or isolation
  • Lifestyle factors: Sleep deprivation, physical recovery, and daily fatigue

Why is treatment important?

Untreated postpartum depression can lead to:

  • Ongoing sadness, guilt, or emotional disconnection
  • Difficulty bonding with your baby over time
  • Increased fatigue and physical exhaustion
  • Struggles in relationships and daily functioning
  • Higher risk of long-term depression or anxiety
