What is PTSD?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after a person experiences or witnesses a traumatic event involving actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. While many people feel distress shortly after trauma, PTSD is diagnosed when symptoms persist for more than one month and significantly interfere with daily life.
Symptoms of PTSD
- Flashbacks or feeling like the event is happening again
- Disturbing nightmares
- Staying away from places, people, or activities linked to the event
- Feeling emotionally numb or detached
- Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
- Being easily startled or constantly “on guard”
- Risk-taking or self-destructive behaviours
Not sure if it's ptsd?
A short, confidential self-assessment can help you decide whether it’s time to talk to someone.
Causes of PTSD
- Chronic trauma (especially repeated or long-term trauma)
- Lack of social support after the event
- Past traumatic experiences, particularly in childhood
- Biological factors, such as genetics and stress-response differences
Why is treatment important?
Untreated Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Treatment can lead to:
- Chronic depression and anxiety disorders
- Substance or alcohol misuse
- Relationship and family difficulties
- Work or academic impairment
- Physical health problems (heart disease, chronic pain, sleep disorders)
- Increased risk of self-harm or suicidal thoughts
