What is C-PTSD?

Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) is a trauma-related mental health condition that develops after prolonged or repeated exposure to highly distressing experiences, often occurring over months or years.

These experiences can deeply affect overall functioning in daily life—socially, academically, and professionally.

Symptoms of C-PTSD

  • Flashbacks, nightmares, and unwanted or distressing memories
  • Feelings of detachment from one's body, thoughts, or surroundings
  • Constant emotional changes, including low mood, emotional numbness, intense shame or guilt, self-blame, and memory difficulties
  • Hypervigilance, sleep disturbances, irritability, and thoughts of self-harm or suicide
  • Behavioural changes, including anger outbursts, aggression, social withdrawal, and increased risk-taking behaviours.

Causes of C-PTSD

  • Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse
  • Domestic violence, assault, or prolonged exposure to threat
  • Witnessing traumatic or life-threatening events
  • Severe neglect, especially during childhood
  • Natural disasters, serious accidents, war, or displacement
  • Long-term exposure to stress without adequate support

Why is treatment important?

When left untreated, trauma disorders may lead to:

  • Chronic mental health difficulties
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Depression, anxiety disorders, or bipolar disorder
  • Increased risk of self-harm, substance misuse, or suicidal thoughts

Evidence-based trauma treatment, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), can significantly reduce symptoms, improve emotional regulation, and restore overall well-being.
