Short, honest responses to the questions we hear most often — written by our own clinicians. No jargon, no lectures. Just the kind of clear answer you’d hope to get across the table.

Starting therapy

I feel anxious about my first session. Is that normal?

Almost everyone does — the nerves are a sign you are taking it seriously, not a sign something is wrong. There is no script to perform and nothing you have to get right. You can arrive exactly as you are.

Psychiatry

Does seeing a psychiatrist mean I’ll be on medication forever?

No. Medication is one option among several, not a default — and where it helps, it is usually part of a plan with a beginning, middle, and review, not a life sentence. The decision is always made with you, never for you.

Recovery

If I relapse, does that mean treatment failed?

A slip is information, not a verdict. Recovery rarely moves in a straight line, and what matters most is what we learn from a setback and how quickly support comes back in — not that it happened at all.

Eating disorders

My teenager won’t talk about food. What can I do?

Lead with the relationship, not the plate. Curiosity and warmth open more doors than pressure ever will — and you do not have to figure it out alone; bringing a clinician in early changes the odds considerably.

ADHD & autism

Can adults really be diagnosed with ADHD?

Yes — and many are, often after a lifetime of wondering why ordinary things felt harder. A proper assessment can re-frame the past and open up practical, well-evidenced support for the present.

Depression

How is a low mood different from depression?

Low mood tends to lift with rest, time, or a change of scene. Depression settles in and dims things for weeks — affecting sleep, appetite, energy, and how you see yourself. When it lingers, it is worth talking to someone.
